What is Eagala?

Healing through Horses

Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, or EAGALA is an experiential learning approach that promotes the development of life skills through equine assisted activities. This may include grooming, feeding and ground exercises, but there is no riding involved. Mental Health professionals work with one or more clients in an experiential manner to help the clients learn about themselves and others, while processing or discussing the clients feelings, behaviours and patterns. The goal is to help the client in social, emotional and cognitive or behavioural ways.

We use Equine Assisted Therapy, or EAT to treat clients for eating disorders, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, addiction and PTS, as well as growth and learning programmes. We facilitate personal empowerment and healing, through the application of equine assisted interventions.

Why Horses?

Because horses are prey animals, their survival depends on their instinctive ability to sense underlying energetic and emotional currents in their environment. They are fully in the present moment, have no judgement and don’t hold on to the past or worry about the future. One of nature's beautiful gifts is that horses intuitively respond to our emotional states. With their innate ability to see our true thoughts, emotions and feelings, horses can see behind the veil.

Horses are sensitive to their surroundings, and we harness this ability to give us immediate feedback on our state of mind. Horses hold no judgement, resentment or preconceptions. They are honest and pure. Living in a herd means each individual animal has a job or role to ensure their members are safe. We can use this observation to mirror our own roles in society, family, schools and relationships. Horses are both healers and teachers. Read the 10 ways that horses can help humans.
